What is IPL Photofacial?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacial is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmentation, redness, and signs of sun damage beneath the skin’s surface.

Living in sunny Santa Barbara means our skin often bears the marks of California sun exposure. Brown spots, age spots, freckles, and redness from broken capillaries can make skin look older and uneven. IPL treatments effectively address these concerns.

The light energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by either the pigment (melanin) in brown spots or the hemoglobin in blood vessels. This breaks down the pigment and coagulates the vessels, which your body then naturally eliminates.

Unlike laser treatments that use a single wavelength, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light that can be customized to your specific skin concerns, making it versatile and effective for multiple issues in one treatment. Lumecca IPL and Ultra fractional laser treatments at MiraMed start at $600 for the face, with a package of 3 treatments for $1,500; additional areas such as the neck and chest are available as add-ons.

IPL photofacial appointments at MiraMed take about 30 minutes for the face; Ultra fractional laser treatments may also require approximately 30 minutes of topical numbing beforehand. Downtime varies by treatment type and intensity – after Lumecca IPL, temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling is common and treated pigmentation may darken before gradually flaking away, while after Ultra fractional laser a rough, sandpaper-like texture is common as the skin renews; most visible healing is typically complete within about one week. Peak results from a single IPL treatment are typically seen around 4 weeks, and a series of 3 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart is a common starting series, with benefits continuing to improve for about 1-3 months after the final session. Treatments are performed by MiraMed’s licensed Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners under the medical supervision of Hetal Patel, MD, Medical Director.

Good candidates for IPL and laser skin treatments are adults looking to improve sun damage, brown spots, redness, uneven tone or texture, fine lines, and overall skin quality. Laser skin treatments are not performed during pregnancy, and may be postponed or modified with active infection or open wounds in the treatment area, recent tanning or significant sun exposure, or certain photosensitizing medications – medical history, skin type, and treatment goals are reviewed beforehand to determine whether Lumecca IPL or Ultra is appropriate.

What to Expect

Before Treatment: Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for 2 weeks. Discontinue retinoids and exfoliating acids 3-5 days prior. Come with clean skin.

During Treatment: A cooling gel is applied to protect your skin. You’ll wear protective eyewear. The handpiece delivers pulses of light – most describe it as a warm snap. Treatment takes 30-45 minutes.

Immediately After: Mild redness similar to a light sunburn. Brown spots may appear darker initially – this is normal and means the treatment is working.

Recovery: Over 3-7 days, darkened spots will rise to the surface and flake off naturally. Avoid picking at the skin. Use gentle skincare and SPF 30+ daily.
