What are PDO Threads?
PDO (polydioxanone) threads are a popular cosmetic treatment that tightens, lifts, and revitalizes your skin by stimulating collagen production after small, dissolvable sutures are inserted into the skin. These threads are biodegradable and dissolve over time, making them a safe and effective option for skin rejuvenation. The procedure involves inserting the threads into the skin using fine needles, creating a supportive structure that lifts and tightens the targeted areas. The threads remain in place for about 6 months before they dissolve, but because they promote natural collagen production, results can last a few months after this. There are three types of PDO threads that serve different purposes: smooth, twist, and barbed.
Types of PDO Threads
There are three main types of PDO threads, each serving a unique purpose:
- Smooth Threads
- Description: Smooth threads are straight and are primarily used to stimulate collagen production rather than provide a lifting effect. They create a mesh-like network under the skin, improving texture and firmness over time.
- Best For: Fine lines, forehead wrinkles, acne scars, and under-eye areas.
- Barbed Threads
- Description: Barbed threads have tiny barbs along their length that latch onto the skin tissue, providing a strong lifting effect. These threads are ideal for areas that need significant lifting and contouring.
- Best For: Jawline, cheeks, and brow lift.
- Twist Threads
- Description: Twist threads are coiled, providing a greater lifting effect compared to smooth threads. They are commonly used to treat deeper wrinkles and areas that need more significant support.
- Best For: smile lines, marionette lines, and neck wrinkles.

Benefits of PDO Threads
- Non-Surgical: PDO threads offer a non-surgical alternative to facelifts, providing noticeable results without the risks and recovery time associated with surgery.
- Collagen Production: The threads stimulate the body’s natural collagen production, resulting in long-lasting improvements in skin texture and firmness.
- Acne Scar Improvement: Collagen production stimulated by the PDO threads helps improve the appearance of rough skin texture from acne scarring.
- Customizable: With different types of threads available, treatments can be tailored to address specific concerns and achieve desired results.
My Experience with PDO Threads at MiraMed and Day Spa
As someone who has developed some wrinkles over the years, I decided to try PDO twist threads at MiraMed and Day Spa! The team at MiraMed was professional and attentive, making sure I was comfortable and informed throughout the entire process. Here’s a breakdown of my experience:
Preparation and Procedure
- Consultation: My journey began with a quick consultation where we discussed my aesthetic goals, skin concerns, and the best type of PDO threads for my needs. We decided to use twist threads to address my smile lines and upper lip wrinkles. My before photos were taken and I hopped on a quick telehealth call with MiraMed’s provider for a “good faith exam” to make sure none of my medical history interfered with precautions for the procedure.
- Preparation: To minimize discomfort, numbing cream was applied for 20-30 minutes beforehand. The nurses ensured I was relaxed and prepared for the treatment and even gave me a stress ball to play with as a distraction.
- Insertion: The actual insertion of the threads was fairly quick as Nurse Mariah placed the threads above my upper lip and along my smile lines on each side. The needle felt semi-uncomfortable, especially in the areas closer to my lips, but the numbing cream helped.
Aftercare and Results
You could immediately see slight results of minor tightening and smoothing of wrinkles, however, more noticeable effects were visible after about 3-6 weeks. A small bruise appeared after the first day and my lower face ached near the sites of the threads for about three days, however, all was manageable. In the weeks following my procedure, I noticed more lifting and smoothing of my wrinkles and even a bit of a lift in my top lip making it appear more voluminous. Over the next few months, the threads stimulated collagen production, further enhancing the texture and firmness of my skin.
I was instructed to avoid showering or washing my face for 24 hours after the procedure to make sure the thread placement did not move. I was also told to refrain from extremely strenuous workouts, yoga, exaggerated facial expressions, dental procedures, and deep facial massages for 2-3 weeks. Overall, there’s not much downtime needed for this treatment and I would recommend PDO Threads for a more natural alternative to Botox!
