What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

To understand PRP, let’s first break down the four main components in our blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Platelets are small cells that circulate throughout our body and bind together when they identify any damaged blood vessels. Platelets are made in our bone marrow along with white and red blood cells. Plasma makes up about 55% of our blood content. They transport nutrients, hormones, and proteins to the parts of the body that need them. So, what exactly is PRP? In simple terms, PRP is a platelet-concentrated component from your own blood that is packed with nutrient-rich cells and protein growth factors that work wonders in repairing and rejuvenating tissues.

How is PRP prepared?

First, a small sample of your blood is drawn by one of our nurses and placed in a sterile, disposable container. The vials of blood are then spun at high speed in our centrifuge to separate the platelets from your blood sample. The different densities of your blood components allow the platelets to separate when spun, resulting in platelet-rich plasma. The enriched plasma can be used topically or as an injection to boost healing and regeneration!
