Understanding Fitzpatrick Skin Types in Aesthetic Treatments
When it comes to skincare and laser treatments, knowing your Fitzpatrick skin type is essential for ensuring safe and effective results. This classification system helps medical professionals assess how different skin tones respond to sun exposure and laser treatments. At MiraMed and Day Spa, we use the Fitzpatrick scale to help determine the best laser (laser hair removal and Intense Pulsed Light) treatment settings for our clients, ensuring optimal results for every skin type.
In this blog, we’ll explain what the Fitzpatrick skin type system is, the different prototypes, and how it applies to laser hair removal—especially for darker skin tones.
What Is the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale?
The Fitzpatrick scale was developed by dermatologist Thomas Fitzpatrick in 1975 to classify different skin tones based on their response to UV exposure. This scale helps medical professionals predict the likelihood of sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and the skin’s reaction to laser treatments.
The Six Fitzpatrick Skin Types:
- Type I (Very Fair, Pale Skin)
- Burns easily, never tans
- Typically has freckles
- Common in individuals with red or blonde hair and light eyes
- Type II (Fair Skin)
- Burns easily, tans minimally
- Often light-haired with blue or green eyes
- Type III (Medium Skin Tone, Light Olive)
- Sometimes burns, gradually tans to a light brown
- Common among those with darker blonde or light brown hair
- Type IV (Olive or Light Brown Skin)
- Rarely burns, tans easily to a medium brown
- Seen in Mediterranean, Hispanic, and some Asian skin tones
- Type V (Brown Skin)
- Hardly ever burns, tans darkly
- Common among Middle Eastern, Indian, and some African-American individuals
- Type VI (Dark Brown to Black Skin)
- Never burns, deeply pigmented
- Found in individuals with African, Caribbean, and Aboriginal backgrounds
Each skin type prototype reacts differently to laser treatments, making it essential to choose the right technology for safe and effective results.
How Fitzpatrick Skin Type Affects Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin (brown/black pigment) in hair follicles. It doesn’t target light blonde or red hair well. The challenge arises with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV-VI) because traditional lasers can mistake skin pigmentation for hair, increasing the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation with improper settings and technology.
To prevent complications, our more advanced laser technology (explained below) is used to safely treat darker skin tones while effectively removing unwanted hair.
Best Laser Types for Different Fitzpatrick Skin Types
Fitzpatrick I-III:
- Alexandrite Laser (755nm) – Effective for light to medium skin tones with dark or light brown hair.
- Diode Laser (810nm) – Works well for light to medium skin, offering deeper penetration.
Fitzpatrick IV-VI (Darker Skin Tones):
- Nd:YAG Laser (1064nm) – The safest laser for darker skin. It bypasses the skin’s surface and targets the hair follicle directly, reducing risks of pigmentation issues.
- Diode Laser (810nm) – A safe alternative for medium to darker skin tones, offering deep penetration with minimal side effects.
At MiraMed and Day Spa, we specialize in laser hair removal for all Fitzpatrick skin types. Our ND:YAG laser emits a different wavelength of light, allowing for safe hair removal on darker skin. Here at MiraMed, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro laser, which has both ND:YAG (1064 nm) and Alexandrite (755 nm) laser wavelengths, equipped with cryogen gas that acts as a cooling system for your skin. We also use the Diolaze XL Diode (810 nm) laser by InMode, which has a sapphire tip for a cooling effect and uses ultrasound gel for a barrier between your skin and the handpiece.
Why Fitzpatrick Classification Matters in Medical Spas
Understanding your Fitzpatrick skin type helps our team of professionals:
