What is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip is a cosmetic procedure that gives your lips that voluminous, pouty look without injecting any lip filler. Instead of filler, four to six units of a neurotoxin like Botox or Jeuveau are injected superficially into the orbicularis oris muscle above your upper lip. This allows the muscle to relax, causing your upper lip to lift or “flip” upwards, creating a more voluminous and plump appearance. The injection takes no longer than 2 minutes and numbing cream can be applied beforehand to reduce any discomfort. Results will be visible after about 4 days while continuing to develop for another week. Lip flip results are more subtle than filler because your natural lip volume is not being altered, however, they can be complemented with filler or used as an alternative. They are also an easy add-on if you’re already getting Botox treatment in other areas. We recommend lip flips to those with lips that naturally curl inwards when relaxed or smiling.

Benefits of a Lip Flip

  • Quick Procedure: The lip flip is a fast procedure, typically taking around 2-5 minutes, excluding optional numbing for 20-30 minutes.
  • Subtle Enhancement: Unlike lip fillers, a lip flip provides a natural-looking enhancement without adding actual volume. It enhances the shape and appearance of the lips subtly.
  • Minimal Downtime: With a lip flip, there is minimal to no downtime. Patients can resume their regular activities immediately after the procedure. Patients should avoid intense exercise for 24 hours and refrain from pursing their lips.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to lip fillers, a lip flip is
more affordable, making it a more accessible option.
  • Temporary Effects: The results of a lip flip are temporary, lasting about 6 to 8 weeks. This allows individuals to try out the look without committing to a long-term change.

Patient Experience

Hey blog readers! I got a lip flip at MiraMed Spa and this is how it went.

After filling out an intake form and signing a photo consent form, I spoke with their provider via telehealth for a good faith exam. They asked me a series of questions regarding my health and medical history to clear me for treatment.

Once cleared, photos of my lips and smile were taken and numbing cream along the lines of my top lip was applied. Numbing cream is optional, but I’m a bit of a baby when it comes to needles! The numbing cream took effect much quicker than I expected and before I knew it, my top

lip was cold and numb. Nurse Mariah brought me into a cute little room where I sat on the treatment chair to be prepped. She wiped off my numbing cream and cleaned my upper lip with alcohol wipes. When I was ready, she made 4 single unit injections (4 units total) of Jeuveau along the skin above my top lip with two on each side. The needle felt like a small prick but thanks to the numbing cream, it barely hurt at all.

After the injections, I couldn’t see results immediately, only minimal swelling. However, after about three days I started noticing my top lip lifting up, giving my lips more volume. During the first week, one side of my top lip was slightly lifted higher than the other side but it was only noticeable if I stared at it up close in the mirror for a long time–which I did. I confirmed with MiraMed that this slight unevenness for about a week after neurotoxin injections is completely normal, although it may or may not happen to you. After two weeks, the final results were in full effect and my lips looked amazing! Even though a lip flip is more subtle than filler, the difference in my top lip gave my lips more volume, evenness, and that pouty look I always had to pencil in with my lip liner. Frequently Asked Questions:

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects are mild and temporary, including slight swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection site. Some patients may experience minor discomfort or a temporary bulgy feeling in the upper lip, which typically resolves within a few days. For about a week following the procedure, patients might also experience a temporary inability to fully control the muscles above their lip, most typically when using a straw.

Who is a good candidate for a Lip Flip?

A lip flip is ideal for individuals who want a subtle enhancement to their upper lip without adding volume. It’s suitable for those looking to improve the shape of their lips or reduce a gummy smile. However, it’s not the most effective treatment for individuals with significant lip volume loss or those seeking a dramatic change.

How do I care for my lips after a Lip Flip?

  • Avoid Touching: Refrain from massaging or touching your lips for 24 hours to prevent neurotoxin migration.
  • No Heavy Exercise: Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours post-procedure.
  • Avoid pursing lips: Refrain from pursing your lips or drinking from a straw for 2-3 days following the procedure
  • Stay Upright: Keep your head elevated for a few hours after treatment to minimize swelling.
  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and keep your lips moisturized.

Can I combine a Lip Flip with other treatments?
